Goodbye Guangzhou!

It's a bittersweet time. We cannot wait to get back home and settled into a "normal" routine, but tonight we had to say goodbye to some wonderful people that have been like family to us over the last 2 1/2 weeks. We never came to China expecting to make friends, but new friends we now have. Friends that have been through a similar experience, friends that have grown to love each other's kids and seen each other in the good and bad. I look forward to keeping in touch with these new friends as the years go on and watch their sweet children grow in their forever families. Gracie, who has been a solid rock this entire trip, gave in to some pretty hard emotions tonight as she said goodbye to Syd, her new friend, and Syd's parents, and three other families we've grown to love. I haven't seen her cry that hard over saying goodbye in a very long time. The good news is that all but one family of our new friends live in Colorado and we know we will be going to Colorado often so the chances of seeing them again are pretty good! The other family lives in Maryland, and well, we'll drop in someday, maybe on our way to Boston, or we can just wait for Jerry to drive down in his Porche! :-)
We are also saying goodbye to a beautiful island, some sweet Chinese friends and a wonderful guide, Grace. It was here in Guangzhou that John Asher began to truly show us his personality, let go of his past and embrace his new sisters, brother and even his mom. He now comes to me without much hesitation, he allows me to give him a bottle and feed him breakfast, but he still wants daddy to put him to bed. We fall more and more in love with him everyday and now, we cannot imagine him not being a part of our family.
A few things we have learned about our son:
He is a quick learner
He is fiesty and has some tremendous determination (in China we call this being "spicy")
He has the sweetest little smooshed grin and a big smile with two little teeth
He is slow to get to know and slow to want to get to know you, but we believe this will change over time
His laugh is contagious
He loves eggs, rice congee and potato chips
He is a fighter, and this will come in handy when he is recovering from surgery
He can babble the sweetest little sounds, we have no idea if he is saying words, but we have heard him say things that sound like mama, dada, bapa and nana. If he knows what they mean, that is awesome. If not, we'll take it anyways!
He has a bright future ahead of him, and we will forever be his family!
Tomorrow, we will post from Beijing, our final post from China! Goodnight from Guangzhou!
