Playing Sick

I love playing catch with my daddy! Look at me! I have the world in my hands! Dad, you are so funny! Madi Beth mustered up her best smile while enduring a fever and sore throat. No worries, she has all her friends surrounding her with love, including her best friend, Jessie!

Tagged!!

So Jenna at Waiting for Panda Bear tagged me to write three random things about myself. She says I am level headed (ha ha) and needs to hear about a few of my quirks.

The Rules: Post 3 random things about yourself. Link to the person who tagged you in your post. Tag at least 5 other bloggers. Let them know you've tagged them by posting a comment on their blog with an invite to participate.

What you've been waiting for...

1. I am slightly OCD. I have been known on many occasions to begin backing out of the driveway only to stop the van and run back to the house to make sure I turned off the oven or the iron or stopped the dryer. You get the picture. And then I will always double check to make sure I locked the door by jiggling it extra hard a couple of times. Just a little obsessive.

2. I was born in Guam. When I was younger I used to tell my friends I was Guamanian. I still tell people that I cannot tolerate cold weather all that well because I spent the first two years of my life on a Pacific tropical island. I tell my husband all the time that if something were to happen to him I might just move back to a tropical island, Pacific or Caribbean.

3. I am addicted to my computer. Again, obsessively. I check in on it at least 20 times a day. It doesn't help that it sits right here in my dining/kitchen/living room area. So if I have a minute or two I'll pull up my email, blogs and websites I check regularly. It is one of those things I am really working on when I posted the questions from Beauty from the Heart.

I know I am much more quirky than that, but right now I cannot think of anything else. The baby had me up quite a bit last night. Every time I think about having another one he pulls an all nighter and I change my mind. Funny how that happens. I know many people that read my blog that don't comment or that do comment but don't have a blog of their own but not that many that actually read it and post a comment and have a blog. So I will tag my recently moved BFF Leigh Ann and also a new friend, Leslie, if you still read my blog I tag you...

Weekend Fun

At Grandma and Papa's farm the kids covered their ears while Daddy showed us how loud the crocodile/bear/monster/squirrel gun can sound. (This comes after a late night conversation with daddy about how he can protect us from all things scary!) Getting ready for those Blue Angels to begin flying. Got our sunscreen on and our eyes and ears protected! Courtesy our crazy, overprotective mom! Eli wasn't too sure about any of it and wouldn't keep his ear plugs in and just wanted mommy so he could fall asleep in her arms! The Amazing Blue Angels. Yes, they are flying upside down and very close. My heart was racing the whole time!

North vs South

I had an interesting conversation with a group of women tonight at dinner. One lady is from Australia and she found it interesting that when they lived up North they were invited into peoples homes more times in one year than they have in the seven years they've lived in the South. Another lady pointed out that it is probably because here in the south we feel like there are certain standards to live by. Therefore if we don't have a nice, large home in the perfect neighborhood, decorated according to Southern Living magazine we won't invite people over. If we do, the home must be immaculate, the food presented beautifully and tasting perfect, and just the right hospitality and entertainment for our guests. At first I thought this was a little extreme, until I realized that I do not invite others into my home because it is too small, not decorated as nice as some others I have been in (although I do my best and I think it is cute). I worry about where everyone will sit to eat, or if I have enough platters to display the food, or if my guests will be bored. I am so worried about meeting the standards and the expectations so much that I am missing out on some Big blessings by inviting others in. Several ladies told stories about how in other countries that invite others over so that their is standing room only and everyone has a wonderful time! But here, we are so concerned about the material things that we are missing out on what the Lord wants us to see, and that is matters of the heart! He tells us to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things. We should be focusing on the person in our home, not on how our home should please that person. Let me confess that I have missed out on many opportunities to invite people, strangers and close friends alike, into my home because I was concerned that my home wasn't good enough or didn't meet someones expectations. I have been convicted tonight about this. It will still be a struggle as we Southern girls are raised to meet certain expectations. But God isn't a "Southern" God and he just wants to use us to minister to others in need. I pray that the Lord will continue to work in my heart in this area of pride and discontent....

Hippie Family

Here are some pictures of my neice and sister and brother in law from a 70's party they recently attended. I thought these were great and wanted to share!

I Would Gather Children

Some would gather money

Along the path of life,

Some would gather roses,

And rest from worldly strife;

But, I would gather children

From among the thorns of sin,

I would seek a golden curl,

And a freckled, toothless grin.

For money cannot enter

In that land of endless day,

And roses that are gathered

Soon will wilt along the way.

But, Oh, the laughing children,

As I cross the sunset sea,

And the gates swing wide to heaven

I can take them in with me.

Fun in Baby Brother's Swing

Eli's Christmas present has become the girls most favorite toy! Maybe this summer the girls will get some swings of their own and Eli won't have to share his! Won't he be so happy!

Expelled!

I want to write about a movie that has come out but may not be well known. Tonight I went with our church's youth group to see the movie Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed! I've been studying the book The Case for a Creator by Lee Strobel with our youth D Groups on Sunday nights. Lee Strobel makes the case for Intelligent Design and how the beginnings of the universe and human beings can only point to an Intelligent Designer. Those of us that believe in God as the creator of the universe know that HE IS the Intelligent Designer. In this movie Ben Stein researched and discussed how and why well known scientists were losing their jobs and being ostracized from the educational realm because of their research in Intelligent Design. This led him to discover that while we are a "free" country and we are supposed to be "open" to ideas, the idea of teaching Intelligent Design in school is not being allowed! In fact, Intelligent Design is being Expelled in all arenas of science! If you have teenagers I would encourage you to watch this movie with them or before them and then discuss it with your youth. There were a few unnecessary words and graphic images that could have been left out. However, I think this movie made a valid effort to show where America is failing to allow scientists and students of science to truly explore all avenues of science. Something to ponder.

Die to Self

As I struggle daily with taking my focus off of myself and putting it on to Christ and his glory I realize I must change some things about myself and how I live my life. I don't know about you, but it is an ongoing battle against the flesh to die to self and live for Christ and I want Christ to win this battle and be glorified in my life. I believe the Lord led me to a series of challenging questions to help me refocus in this new season of my life. I would like to share them with you and maybe in the coming weeks I will share how these questions are changing my focus and my life. They came from Beauty From the Heart

  • Do you act out of obedience to Christ and a passion for His glory--or your own?
  • How do you spend your time?
  • How much of your time per day is spent chatting with friends (online, on the phone or in person)?
  • How much of your time per day is spent daily in conversation with family members?
  • How much of your time is spent daily speaking to God?
  • How often do you meditate on the Cross? (Once a day? Once a week? Once a year?)
  • Do you set time aside every day for prayer and Bible study?
  • Do you try to faithfully obey God in public and at home?
  • Do you ask God for the grace to help you obey consistently?
  • What people, books, movies, etc. influence you the most?
  • Do you read books, watch movies, or listen to music that does not encourage your walk with Christ? Do you think this is wise?
  • Are your friends fellow Christians who are seeking after godliness? Or do they encourage you in gossip and ungodly thoughts?
  • If so, do you also join in that gossip and allow those thoughts to dominate your mind?
  • What are your main spheres of influence?
  • What steps could you take to become a stronger influence of a Christ-like attitude to friends, siblings, neighbors, relatives, etc.?
  • Do you actively serve in your community?
  • When making decisions, do you consider how they affect others?

Where is Spring?

I found myself digging through the winter clothes tubs in the attic last night so my five year old wouldn't freeze during soccer practice. For her six o clock practice it was 50 degrees. Where did Spring go, I ask you? It is mid April for heavens sake!!! I packed up all our winter clothes weeks ago. Seriously, this is Georgia. It doesn't get this cold in April! Oh Spring, please come back to us!!!! I need to wear my flip flops to show off my pretty pink toes!!!!

Ups and Downs

Yesterday was difficult, I am just so glad it is over. Leigh Ann called it the neverending goodbye, and I felt that way as well. Today has been hard so far too. It feels like a grieving process. I know I won't stay sad forever, but for now it is just too fresh. I bought the kids some art projects and have a few fun things planned to break up the long week. On the good news front, we were able to join a swimming pool for the summer. I know the girls will be so excited! They love to swim!

My China Love

This most precious face is one I am going to miss greatly. I prayed for this baby to come home to her family for so long and feel like I am connected to her through those prayers. She keeps my spirits high when the adoption slow down gets me sad. She is all joy and blessings to those that know her. She has recently discovered that she wants Jeremiah to play "reach the sky" with her and he has loved that as well. After spending some time with her the other night Jeremiah asked me if it feels like our adoption will never happen. That it is so far off, almost inconceivable. Sometimes I do, but it is this precious reminder that keeps me going. I love you Sarah Joy and will continue praying for you as you grow!

It's been almost three years since we moved back. I remember distinctly asking God to send Jeremiah and I a couple that we could be friends with, and for friends for our children. I remember buying our small home that needed to be completely renovated and I remember the Harris Family jumping in and volunteering to help. Leigh Ann would stop by in the afternoon to see how things were going, chat for a few minutes and be on her way. And I remember God telling me, I've answered your prayer.

There were many things that brought us together: adoption, our children, Bible Study, our church but most of all our desire to die to self and live for Christ. It honestly began back in 2004 when Life Action Ministries came to our church the first time and our lives were forever changed. Then the Lord required a true test of faith as Jeremiah lost his job and we had to move in with his parents for nine months and depend completely on him. During this time God spoke to our family and called us to adopt a baby into our home. Separately but within weeks of each other, God was calling the Harris family to do the same thing. Then God led our family back to Watkinsville where he also brought our two families together to encourage one another and enjoy each other's company.

Since then we've been on Mission Trips together, enjoyed Christian concerts, eaten at Chick-Fil-A a whole lot and watched our children grow. We've prayed together, studied the Bible together and praised God in the good and in the bad. We've prayed them to China and back home, prayed for the sale of their business and for the Lord to lead them in the new direction in their life. We've prayed that they would raise support to join Life Action Ministries and for the sale of their home and the purchase of a new one. And now, God has answered all these prayers and it is time for them to go and fully begin living the call God has placed on their lives.

As I struggle for appropriate words to write, I realize I could never sum up how I truly feel in just a short post. I could not begin to describe what this friendship has meant to me, how much I love them and their family and how incredibly much I will miss them. And then, at the same time, how excited I am for them and the new life they have ahead of them and the impact they will make on the kingdom of God. Their testimony is one of forgiveness and mercy, faithfulness and trust and a love for Jesus Christ that surpasses most I know. As I continue to pray them on I know that my life has been blessed by our friendship and the love we share for each other and for Jesus Christ.

I've tried so hard not to cry and talk about it a lot as it upsets us all, but that doesn't mean I don't hurt inside and struggle with how to handle these mixed emotions. I've always treasured the time we've had together and all the more as they prepare to leave for Michiana on Monday morning. As we worship side by side one final time Sunday morning I will count this as such a blessing that God sent friends that aren't afraid to talk about spiritual matters and share from the heart. Transparent. Genuine. Loyal. Trustworthy. Loving. Gracious. Kind. Precious Friends.

9 Months Old

Eli is 9 months old today! What a sweetheart he is. I love his laugh, his ambition to learn new things, his love for me, his daddy and his sisters and his new talent of giving kisses. He is crawling everywhere, either belly scooting or most recently on all fours! He can get anywhere in the house he desires, which can be a little scary at times! Truly I can say this baby boy is a joy!

Homeland Security

One might be nervous to recieve an envelope from the Dept. of Homeland Security, but for us, it is a blessing. Today we received our I-797, Notice of Action. This is our renewal. Our first one expired this past February. It is effective until May 22, 2009. I can only pray that we will travel to pick up our child by then! Oh how I need to travel by then!!!!

Taming the Tongue - James Chapter 3

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. No man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. James 3: 6 -10
Precious Lord, Forgive me when I speak inappropriately, please forgive the words that come out of my mouth that do not glorify you and please tame my tongue. I pray that I will learn to not speak unless my words are uplifting and encouraging to others and praise to you. Thank you for your forgivness and grace.
Obviously if I am publicly writing a post about this I must be struggling in this area. Negativity abounds in my family and I seem to pick up on it. Thankfully my husband is the complete opposite and is teaching me to be positive and teaching our kids to be positive. However, I seem to have this disease of speaking at inappropriate times, saying things just because there is silence and often, my words do not honor and please the Lord. Twice in the last five days my words could possibly have indirectly offended or hurt someone's feelings, and that was not my intention at all. Let's just be honest, I need to learn to shut my mouth!
